The TW (TRP&PTG) Department was established during 1985-86. The State Government, initially, taken up rehabilitation of PTGs through the Forest Department by establishing 3(three) Tribal Rehabilitation Divisions namely Manu, Ambassa, Jatanbari since 1983- 84. At present three Tribal Rehabilitation Divisions are in existence namely 1. TR Divsion, North, 2. TR Division, Dhalai and 3. TR Division South headed by Deputy Directors under an umbrella of Directorate of TRP & PvTG.  There are 14(Fourteen) TR Ranges under these three TR Divisions and 46 (Forty six) TRmmcentres under these 14 TR Ranges.

The Reangs, out of the 19(Nineteen) Scheduled Tribes of Tripura, were recognized by Government of India as the Primitive Tribe, now known as the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group. The population of the Reangs are 1,85,308 (as per Survey conducted by the TRP&PTG Department during 2016).

  As the Reangs were inhabitants of Forest areas / lands the rehabilitation was taken up through plantation of Rubber and Arecanut  along with some other activities like health care, financial assistance for housing, rearing of domestic animal etc. development of infrastructure in and around their habitations. In addition to these finacial assistance for taking up professional courses such as B.Ed & GNM etc.are being extended to uplifts the PvTG youths and vocational training has also been imparted to open up the door for employment.
